Doctors treating rare diseases are some of the hardest working people in the world, sometimes faced with very little information or treatment options, they go above and beyond to support their patients.

These doctors don’t go unnoticed, nor do the people fighting these battles. Rare Diseases South Africa has launched an awards system to honour the people working tirelessly to advocate and treat rare diseases in South Africa.

Rare Diseases South Africa work to support families and patients that have been diagnosed. They advocate and educate in the hopes of building a better understanding of the various diseases. Statistics surrounding these diseases are scary, 95% of rare diseases don’t have any FDA approved drug treatments, making it a challenge to treat them effectively.

The Rare Diamond Awards have been created to recognise excellence in the advancement of overall healthcare, treatment and support offered by all those working within the Rare Diseases space in South Africa as well as individuals that have made a positive impact on the rare disease community. No such national awards exist within the healthcare sector, with entries welcomed from a wide range of patients, caregivers, industry partners and fellow healthcare professionals.

With this being the first of many awards evenings to come, the floor is open to the public to nominate anyone doing good work in the field. There are 6 awards to be handed out at the first ever event.

Eligible Nominees include:

  • patients
  • caregivers
  • advocates
  • physicians
  • medical expert
  • researchers
  • media
  • educators
  • legislators / regulators

If you would like to nominate someone, you can do so here, or for more information, check out their website here.
