Hundreds turned out at Bloubergstrand to share a simple, heartwarming tradition of connection, care, and festive community spirit.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 January 2026) – What started as a simple invitation has become a heartwarming Christmas tradition along Cape Town’s coast.

On Christmas morning, hundreds of people joined Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus for his annual festive walk at Bloubergstrand, starting and finishing at Doodles Beachfront Restaurant. The walk is about more than exercise; the Springbok coach understands that it’s a chance to connect and enjoy some time together on a day that can feel very different for everyone.

“Not everybody is with their families on Christmas Day. But as long as we’re minding each other, caring for each other, whether it’s strangers or family  and spreading the love, that’s what matters.”

Some came with friends, some on their own, but by the end, everyone felt part of the same community. The participants came in all sorts of outfits, adding to the colourful, community feel of the morning. Some were dressed in sporty running gear. There were plenty of Springbok t-shirts on display, showing support for the national rugby team, but fans also wore jerseys from South African football and cricket teams, celebrating the country’s sporting spirit across codes.

This walk follows the success of Coach Erasmus’s first informal fan meet and greet last Christmas and is another example of how he connects with South Africans beyond rugby.

We all know him for building unity through sport. He also shows that leadership doesn’t always need a stage; sometimes it’s about showing up.

By the time everyone returned to the beachfront, the walk had shown that small acts of togetherness can make a big difference.
