The Breast Health Foundation has been selected as the recipient of funds raised by the sale of Woolworths and Relate Trusts Breast Cancer Awareness bracelet.

South Africa (20 October 2020) – 100% not-for-profit organisation Relate, along with Woolworths, have launched a brand new bracelet in aid of breast cancer awareness, to be sold at select Woolworths stores, and on their website. The proceeds from the bracelet sales will be donated to the Breast Health Foundation, an organisation that works to educate the public about breast cancer and breast health.

As we mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Relate is proud to announce the launch of its new bracelet. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers amongst women of all races in South Africa, but early detection can lead to effective treatment and a positive prognosis. However, recent data from private medical aid provider Discovery showed that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted health-seeking behaviour, resulting in a reduction in screening, registration and management of new and existing chronic conditions – most notably breast cancer.

This could be due to reduced disposable income to fund these routine checks, or a result of South Africans being wary of leaving their homes at the height of the pandemic to undergo health screenings. Fortunately, organisations like the Breast Health Foundation continue to work hard to not only support breast cancer patients but also to provide the public with a variety of resources aimed at improving awareness. The funds they raise as an organisation go directly to fund these activities, which includes a hotline, meetings, seminars and outreach, so ensuring their critical work can continue.

“With over 19 million women over the age of 15 being at risk for breast cancer in South Africa during their lifetime, we cannot think of a better organisation to partner with during this month. Annual check-ups and screenings are so important, as is providing support to those who need it.

“By purchasing a bracelet this month, you are standing in solidarity with those who are battling this awful disease,” says Lauren Gillis, Founder of Relate.

The bracelet is available for purchase at select Woolworths stores nationwide, and on the Woolworths website from this month. After a difficult 2020 thanks to COVID-19, the Relate Trust has been working hard to ensure their contributions that make such an enormous difference to the lives of South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens continue uninterrupted.
