A father and daughter’s fishing trip took a frightening turn when they were washed off their canoe in Jocks Bay, Bettys Bay, on New Year’s Day. Luckily, a young man who witnessed the incident quickly alerted the NSRI and provided crucial assistance.
Bettys Bay, South Africa (08 January 2025) -The incredible rescue crew members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) have been kept busy over the past few days by emergency alerts of missing persons and those in distress in the great waters.
A recent urgent call for help was received by the Kleinmond NSRI crew on Wednesday afternoon, 1 January, alerting them to a father and daughter in trouble while canoeing off the coast of Jocks Bay, Bettys Bay.
According to NSRI, the father and daughter were in the water after it appeared that they had been washed off their canoe while they were fishing.
A helpful young man who witnessed the incident quickly alerted the NSRI and provided crucial assistance in responding to and ultimately saving the distressed family.
“While responding to the scene we requested that the local Good Samaritan man indicate, shout towards, the two casualties to swim away from the rocky shoreline to avoid them being battered against the rocky shoreline.
“An NSRI Kleinmond rescue craft was launched into sea conditions with 2-meter swells and with strong gusting winds and we reached the casualties offshore and they were rescued onto our rescue craft,” explains NSRI Communications Officer, Craig Lambinon.
Although what was supposed to be a happy fishing trip unexpectedly turned sour, we’re happy to share that both the father and daughter were brought to shore at Jocks Bay, where they were medically assessed. Thankfully, both were unharmed and did not require further medical attention.
