Restaurant celebrates that they are able to pay full wages for the first time in months because of support from radio host and new customers.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 February 2021) – On the 10th of February 2021, we shared the story about Rian van Heerden from the Scenic Drive on Jacaranda FM, who had heard so many heartbreaking stories from the restaurant industry in the last few weeks. He decided to do something about it. Rian created a segment on his show to lend a helping hand to the industry.

He encouraged all restaurants across South Africa to join the ‘Scenic Special’ by creating a Wednesday promotional meal that would have the locals queuing. They were asked to submit the special to the show, and Rian would feature as many as possible.

Karin Badenhost of Die Eethuis in Kempton Park took up the opportunity to have her restaurant featured on the Scenic Drive. Rian read out her special, and before long, she had 110 people reach out to take advantage of the special.

By these people doing this, Karin will be able to pay her staff in full for the first time in months!

“It was a raging success, I will never ever be able to thank you enough. You have no idea how your wonderful idea to support local restaurants has impacted our lives. Our staff will be paid in full this month, and that is the best feeling as a business owner! It was so successful that we ran out for stock, and in the spirit of how you helped us – friends and family ran around getting additional stock, we just had to make it happen after you sent all that business our way. My heart runs over with gratitude” – Karin Badenhost, Die Eethuis Owner

Scenic Specials can be created by any restaurant willing to create a promotional meal on Wednesdays. Those who share their special offers to drive@jacaramdafm.com could be featured with free on-air promotion.

Restaurants can also participate by using the hashtag #ScenicSpecial as the Scenic Drive team will be encouraging their listeners to seek out Scenic Specials and support the local restaurant business. To view the updated list of participating restaurants, check here.
