It is time to prune your roses but if you are feeling unsure, the Durbanville Rose Garden has opened its doors to teach the public the best techniques.

Durbanville, South Africa (19 July 2023) – Winter is upon us and that means its rose pruning time. In South Africa, pruning is usually started in mid-July until August. If you have roses and didn’t know this, now you do. The City’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted its second annual Rose Care and Pruning Open Day for beginners and enthusiasts in the Durbanville Rose Garden this past weekend.

The Open Day is an opportunity for gardening enthusiasts to hone their skills in rose care and pruning methods, practising on the City’s own roses at the impressive Durbanville Rose Garden. This also helps the city manage its rose garden while giving back.

The garden has a rich history and is renowned for its beauty, making it the wedding photography venue of choice for many couples over the decades.

Opened in 1979, the Durbanville Rose Garden (DRG) spans 3,5 hectares, with an estimated 4 500 bushes of 500 rose cultivars. That is an incredible array of roses and boasts a beauty like no other!

Gardening enthusiasts who missed the weekend workshop can also visit on weekdays, between 08:00 and 15:00 from 17 July until 31 July, to refine their pruning skills, with guidance. So if you need that boost of confidence to make those daunting cuts, you can visit the gardens and learn. All the details for the gardens are here.
