Rosie the rescued cow calf was taken in and hand-raised by the Nelspruit SPCA after her very sickly mother was put down; now she is on the moo-ve to her forever farm.
Mbombela, South Africa (27 June 2023) – We are always in awe of the stories that are shared by animal rescue organisations in South Africa. Rosie is a rescued cow calf that has been hand-raised by the Nelspruit SPCA because she was too young to fend for herself when her mother was put down. The team have kept her healthy and strong and now she is on her way to her forever farm where she will grow up surrounded by her fellow farm creatures.
Rosie’s mom was very sick when Rosie was just a tiny calf. While still completely reliant on mommy cow, the team needed to euthanise her as she was too severely diseased to save. This meant tiny Rosie was all alone in the world. The SPCA team took her in and gave her every comfort a little cow could need.
The SPCA team worked closely with a vet that specialises in livestock and they were able to raise her up until she was old enough to be adopted out.
A local family heard her story and applied to give her the farm life she deserves. She set off on her next adventure and our hearts are so full! Who wouldn’t want to adopt a cow? Cute!!!
“Today our baby cow Rosie went to her forever home on a lovely farm surrounded by other farm animals. She became an orphan a few months ago after we had to emergency slaughter her severely diseased mother. We raised her by hand under close veterinary observation and today she was ready to start her new life.
We were sad to see her go, but happy knowing she will live a life free from harm and discomfort. Fortunately, it is close to Nelspruit and if we miss her too much we can just pop in. Thank you Mignon and family for your love and compassion for her.”
Rosie is no longer a rescued cow, now she is a free cow, that will grace pasture with her fellow farm animals and bring joy to her new family.
SPCAs throughout South Africa will take in all kinds of animals. If they do not have the facilities to care for them, they reach out to other organisations that will and make sure the animal is safely transported to the facility. So if ever you need help with any kind of animal, reach out to your local SPCA and they will help you.
