Kerry Harrison created a route in her area that would be patrolled at peak times to keep runners safer while on the roads.
Bryanston, South Africa (01 September 2020) – Free2Run is a community initiative made possible thanks to the collaboration of an avid runner and Caps Security, Securezza and ADT. This is a voluntary initiative created simply to make the streets safer for runners and hopefully over time, anyone using our roads.
Free2Run was initiated by runner and Bryanston resident Kerry Harrison who created a route in her area that would be patrolled at peak times to keep runners safer.
“The idea was to not only create a safer space for women, although we are a softer target but for the community as a whole to benefit from the safer exercise routes,” she said.
Kerry designed a 15km route through Bryanston that residents can follow at specific patrol times under the watchful eye of a number of private security companies.
“We have simplified the route to a 15km which people can use more boomed areas to tag on distance or do a double loop. We cannot guarantee that there will be no incidents, but the idea is that with more security presence, this will deter criminals.”
They hope to expand the concept into other neighbourhoods so that soon, there will be several routes available to runners that will ensure security is always close by. This is also an encouraging initiative for first time runners who may be scared to head out onto the road.
If you would like to start up a Free2Run Zone in your area or simply support the effort, you are welcome to reach out. You can find out more on Facebook @free2runjozi.
