Us And Them Lekau Matsena Solo Exhibition

Lekau Matsena is hosting his first ever solo exhibition after being named a finalist in the 2016 SA Taxi Foundation Art Awards. This is “Us and Them”!

Lekau Matsena has always had an artistic mind and a political voice! He studied Art and Design before doing self-study of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Unisa.

His talent for mixed media art was recognised when he was selected as a finalist in the 2016 SA Taxi Foundation Art Awards. He paid his respects to his struggle hero’s through his art!

“The art award provides an opportunity to pay tribute to these giants, who made it possible for us to move and speak freely today, in democratic South Africa.”

Now he is about to host his first ever solo exhibition called ‘Us And Them’. The exhibition will take place at the Lizamore & Associates Gallery in Rosebank until the 22nd of July. Matsena’s narration comes from his experiences as a black man and an artist who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Matsena’s mixed media artworks comment on the ideological structures built into society. He unravels and challenges the uncomfortable space of political, social, and racial divisions created by politics and the media in South Africa. His works communicate the behaviours through which different people express “other”, revealing the division between “us and them”.

The Lizamore & Associates gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10h00 to 17h00 and Saturday from 10h00 to 15h00.
