South Africans made the world’s first lockdown movie, all while living through one of the toughest lockdowns in the world; this is Cabin Fever.
South Africa (13 August 2020) – South Africans have been living through one of the toughest lockdowns in the world. This inspired Tim Greene to make a movie about the emotional toll lockdown has taken on families,; whether they are in it together to stuck apart.
Tim asked actors to join him in making a movie that would be filmed entirely in isolation from each other. A group of eleven actors came together, and soon they had a cast for the movie. There were no other crew members or special movie equipment to use. The script was written in sections and adapted to each actor’s location and what that had available to use in their own homes.
The actors would film their scenes and then send them to Tim. Tim would review them and give notes. The cast would then reshoot and so the film was made. The film was completed within 34 days using cellphones and laptops.
The film tells the story of a second wife and stepmother, locked down alone in Cape Town and struggling to keep her far-flung family together. As she deals with this new life, she learns that her husband’s ex-wife is dying of COVID-19. It explores family drama, betrayal, mending relationships and
The harrowing tale is one that many South Africans can relate to, trying to keep connected with loved ones. As we still live and connect through our screens, the story is relevant to our current and futures for a long time to come.
