The Powerpuff Girls just got a South African remix, and it fuses pop culture with South African artistry. The artist hopes to bring this series to galleries one day.
South Africa (03 November 2025) – When you think of the Powerpuff Girls, you probably imagine the iconic phrase “Sugar, spice and everything nice”. Or you probably imagine the iconic trio fighting crime in Townsville, but one South African artist, Bhungane Mehlomakulu is giving the trio a fresh, cultural spin.
Combining his love for dance and his artistic vision, he’s launched the “Bantu Powerpuff Girls” series, a vibrant project celebrating South Africa’s diverse Indigenous languages and traditional attire.
The series is a visual treat! One of labour and love.
“My biggest artwork in size to date & it took over 40 hours to complete in a span of 2 weeks during my free time outside performances and rehearsals.”
Each piece stitches together the familiar Powerpuff Girls aesthetic with the rich textures, colours, and history of Bantu culture, creating something entirely unique.
Bhungane blends the precision of ballet with the bold creativity of contemporary art. Every detail, pays homage to cultural heritage while keeping the fun, energetic vibe of the original show.
The artist hopes this series will eventually be showcased in a gallery, giving more people the chance to experience this blend of art, culture, and dance in person. For those inspired to explore similar projects, he’s also open to commissions, offering fans a way to bring their own vision to life.
With this series, he’s proving that cartoons, dance, and tradition can collide in the most creative way.
