Johannesburg, South Africa (20 July 2020) – South Africa’s top universities have been ranked as the top 6 in Africa recently. uniRank is the leading international higher education directory and search engine featuring reviews and rankings of over 13 000 universities and colleges in 200 countries.
uniRank lists the top universities to answer the question; What are the most popular Universities in Africa? The 2020 ranking was decided using the three criteria listed below;
- being chartered, licensed and/or accredited by the appropriate higher education-related organisation in each country.
- offering at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees).
- delivering courses predominantly in a traditional, face-to-face, non-distance education format.

The top 6 universities in Africa are:
- University of Pretoria
- University of Cape Town
- University of the Witwatersrand
- University of Johannesburg
- University of KwaZulu-Natal
- Universiteit Stellenbosch
The University of Pretoria, also referred to as Tuks, was ranked the best in Africa. The University of Pretoria’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Tawana Kupe said the ranking was a direct result of the high-quality programmes and academics at the university.
