The women from the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children have started making beautiful bracelets as a way to raise funds for the centre.

South Africa (25 August 2023) – In honour of Women’s Month, MySchool has been highlighting causes that inspire. The most recent is the work being done by the women from the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in collaboration with the Kolisi Foundation and Black Betty.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children is called a one-stop centre for women and children who are survivors of abuse. It is a safe space for women and children to recover and heal. They provide emergency shelter for women and children, counselling and mental health support, legal advice, job training and so much more!

The centre was founded to honour the life of Saartjie Baartman, a Khiosan woman who was taken to Paris to be displayed to the masses. She faced unimaginable abuse and died in a foreign land, surrounded by people who took advantage.

The women assisted by the centre, have been invited to join a new partnership with the Kolisi Foundation and Black Betty, a jewellery company. They now make stunning bracelets that inspire truth, happiness, protection, love, mindfulness and women empowerment.

100% of the funds raised through the sale of the bracelets goes back to the centre. Their workshop is set up with all the tools needed to make the bracelets. The job training teaches the women involved how to make jewellery and this training gives them a boost in confidence needed to take their next big step in life. Plus, working on the bracelets gives them financial independence.

“The Saartjie Baartman Centre is involved an initiative called the Beading Project.  The Beading Project is a collaboration between Black Betty, a South African jewellery brand, and the Kolisi Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Springbok rugby player Siya Kolisi. The project aims to empower survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) through skills development and financial independence.” – MySchool
