Ocean View Matric Night School learners are crowdfunding to host their Matric Ball, overcoming financial challenges and inspiring their community.

Western Cape, South Africa (24 March 2024) – In a heartwarming display of resilience and community spirit, Ocean View Matric Night School students are banding together to raise funds for their long-awaited Matric Ball.

This initiative comes after the school decided to forgo hosting matric balls due to the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The students, ranging in age from 22 to 55, have set a target of R10,000 for their crowdfunding campaign. This money will be used to cover essential expenses like the venue, food, and decorations for their Matric Ball.

Mishkah Potts, the brain behind the crowdfunding campaign, shares their heartfelt plea: “We kindly seek your assistance in donating towards our matric ball venue, food and decorations. Considering our circumstances, with many of us earning minimum wage due to the absence of a matric certificate, we humbly request any donations to put towards our achievement.”

Potts further elaborates on the challenges many of these learners face, saying, “Originating from a previously disadvantaged community, we bear the weight of ‘black tax,’ further straining our financial resources as our families navigate challenges.”

Living arrangements also present an added layer of complexity, with a significant number of students either residing in someone’s yard or supporting entire families in a single room.

Despite these obstacles, the students remain steadfast in their pursuit of education.

“Our pursuit of education represents a commitment to breaking barriers, and we envision the matric ball as a symbolic celebration of our second chance at success,” Potts adds.

The night classes at Ocean View High School run on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm. The determined adults enrolled in these classes aim to complete their schooling, opening up better employment and promotion opportunities for themselves and their families.

“This endeavour is not just a personal achievement; it serves as an inspiration to our Ocean View community,” Potts remarks, “demonstrating that life has hurdles but not insurmountable barriers, and it is never too late to strive for the best version of oneself.”

The community response to their fundraising efforts has been nothing short of inspiring. In just 18 days, they have managed to raise almost 20% of their target, showcasing the power of unity and collective action.
