Scarves

It is that time of year again when scarves are left out all over South Africa for the needy to use to keep warm through the winter.

South Africa (10 June 2022) – For the past six years, the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day KnitWits have placed scarves all over South Africa for those in need. This year marks the 7th year of this fun annual event.

The KnitWits have once again risen to the challenge by hand-making thousands of beautiful scarves that will be draped on trees and poles or distributed to various organisations on the 6th of July, 2022. The event is known as “Secret Scarves” and aims to give people the opportunity to pick out a scarf they like without the pressure of someone watching.

The cities and towns are always dropped in a rainbow of colourful scarves this time of year, which are freely available to be taken by any passer-by. As always, a love note is attached, reading ‘I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. Love, 67 Blankets xxx.’

This initiative always kicks off around the wintertime. Participants around the country have spent the last few months knitting and crocheting beautiful scarves to distribute right before our next cold front hits the country.

This year supporters of the event even made a clever little advert to share the news of the upcoming event. It is set to take place throughout South Africa on the 6th of July at 3 pm sharp.

If you would like to become a KnitWit (the affectionate name for supporters of 67 Blankets for Mandela Day), you can do so here.
