Sesame Street: The much loved children’s show introduced a family with two gay dads in a episode titled ‘Family Day‘ during Pride Month.
Global (30 June 2021) – The educational children’s television series Sesame Street aired a new episode earlier this month featuring a family with two dads. The episode premiered during Pride Month.
The purpose of this is to combat stigmas associated with the gay community.
In this episode, called Family Day, of the show’s characters, Nina, introduces her brother, Dave (Chris Costa); his husband, Frank (Alex Weisman), and their daughter, Mia (Olivia Perez).
The characters are seen joining the cast of the children’s show, including Elmo, before a party.
“Elmo’s so happy that you’re all here,” Elmo tells the new Sesame Street characters.
In the same episode, which Sesame Street has aired on its YouTube channel, Frank says: “There’s all kinds of different families, but what makes us a family is that we love each other,” to which Elmo replied: “That’s true!”
Actor Alan Muraoka — who plays Hooper’s Store’s owner Alan — wrote in a social media post that he was “so honoured and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode.”
“Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I’m so excited to introduce Nina’s Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street,” Muraoka said.
“I am so honored and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode. Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!!!!”
Many viewers took Twitter to applaud the breakthrough, hoping that it would pave the way for further diversity in underage programs.
The ‘Family Day’ episode of Sesame Street sends the simple and important message that families come in all forms and that love and acceptance are always the most important ingredients in a family. https://t.co/vpu64aEurS
