Nikita Hendricks from Pins and Needles Sewing, is hosting a charity sewing class to raise awareness and funds for UpswingSA – this is how to join.
Rondebosch, South Africa (27 June 2023) – Nikita Hendricks had it in her heart to give back and she is doing it the only way she knows how, and that is to sew. Nikita is hosting a little charity sewing workshop where participants can make a donation of their choice to join and in return, learn to make a pin cushion. Nikita chose UpswingSA as her charity because they play such a vital role in upcycling.
UpswingSA is a non-profit that focuses on uplifting women through skills development and entrepreneurial opportunities. It is recognised as a skills development organisation founded by a mother-daughter duo, Ayisha and Fatima and based in the southern suburbs of Cape Town.
The team is dedicated to creating a sustainable environment by upskilling women from diverse backgrounds, and encouraging self-employment and job creation through arts and crafts with an environmentally friendly twist. Ladies that have worked through the programme make things like hair accessories, dolls clothing and which ever creative avenue they can think of.
They also run a second-hand shop selling items of clothing and books.
Nikita runs Pins and Needles Sewing, where she offers sewing lessons to people wanting to learn the skill. She has been sewing for the last 9 years and started teaching two years ago.
Aside from teaching people the skills they need to sew, she hopes to do a free class once a month to raise funds for charity. This month Nikita will be teaching beginners how to sew a pin cushion.
