Global (28 March 2022) – Everyone is talking about the Oscars today and the negative headlines it is making across the globe; however, there is a very beautiful moment that we can all talk about a little louder. Troy Kotsur won an Oscar for his role in CODA and, by way of a sign language interpreter, shared his acceptance speech. The beautiful part is how his moving speech left the interpreter in tears.
The beauty of storytelling is that we can often touch the lives of other people with our words. Stories can help people relate to others or feel an emotion, gather understanding and escape from reality. Often we will write stories that leave us choked up or in tears, and all we did was read the words sent in by a generous person. That is what happened as a sign language interpreter shared Troy Kotsur’s acceptance speech with the world; he began to cry at the beauty of Troy’s story.
Troy Kotsur is an American actor and director who has become the first deaf man to win an Oscar. He won an Oscar for supporting his role in CODA. This joined his awards earned at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the British Academy Film Awards and the Critics’ Choice Movies Awards, all for the same film. What makes the story even more moving, was the entire audience at the Oscars signing their applause during the winning moments for CODA. If you didn’t plan on crying today, maybe change your plans. This story is going to move you to tears! Take a look at Troy’s speech below.
Also, this moment is perhaps the most beautiful thing from the Oscars. And the one we should all be talking about.
