Tiny libraries are a source of immense joy for those who stumble upon them. And, two such treasures have reminded people in P.E that the little things count a lot, thanks to the thoughtfulness of two sisters:
Port Elizabeth, South Africa (23 November 2023) — Tiny libraries are the culprits behind great community joy all over the world; from the streets of Paris to corners in Port Elizabeth.
Finding one is like finding a not-so-hidden chest of treasures. Except, a tiny library is even better than treasure because when you share its bounty, you only get richer in joy.
Two tiny libraries have become the stars of the suburbs in Port Elizabeth’s Lorraine and Fernglen. Sharing the same message, ‘Take what you need, replace what you can’, the tiny libraries offer not only the chance to gain a good read for free, but to return the favour and pay the opportunity forward for another lucky finder.
One such library belongs to Erna Milbourn who, at the beginning of the year, took an idea she was inspired by in Paris to home streets. Soon, the library found its home on Marne Avenue, Lorraine.
But, there is another that began around the same time as Lorraine’s gem, and it was only fitting for community members to find out that it belonged to Erna’s sister, Alta Beer.
Against a leafy backdrop and appearing to be another fruit of the tree itself, Alta’s library on Ralston Road, Fern Glenn stands proudly. The library is going strong, and has become a hot topic on community groups; praised for its ethos of sharing.
Like all Little Libraries, the system relies wholly on honesty. If you take a book, place a new one. Keep the books in good nick, and pay the free gift you’ve enjoyed, forward.
Since the libraries in P.E have brought a tangible sense of appreciating the little things to the forefront, we want to name and fame more of their kind.
