10 movies that confront social injustice and equality; films that have the power to challenge and change our perspectives.

 

Global (14 June 2020) – The movie industry is currently offering a handful of movies to watch in light of the recent tragic happenings in the United States.

We have spent the last week watching these films which are available on various streaming platforms.

Ali (2001)

What it’s about: A biography of sports legend Muhammad Ali, focusing on his triumphs and controversies between 1964 and 1974.

Antwone Fisher (2002)

What it’s about: Antwone Fisher, a young navy man, is forced to see a psychiatrist after a violent outburst against a fellow crewman. During the course of treatment, a painful past is revealed and a new hope begins.

Crash (2004)

What it’s about: Winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, Crash is an unflinching look at the complexities of human conflict in America. Set over 36 hours in Los Angeles the lives of citizens with vastly different backgrounds collide in interweaving stories of race, loss and redemption

The Help (2011)

What it’s about: An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African American maids’ point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.

Selma (2014)

What it’s about: Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-nominated movie stars David Oyelowo delivering a stirring performance playing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he tries to secure equal voting rights by marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965.

For Ahkeem (2017)

What it’s about: A junior high school student sees her chances of a better future jeopardized after she gets in a fight and is expelled.

The Hate U Give (2018)

What it’s about: This moving (and never fully appreciated) drama, looks at the fallout that comes after Starr (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend by a police officer and suddenly must find strength in doing the right thing as she’s pressured by all sides.

Just Mercy (2019)

What it’s about: Michael B. Jordan gives a powerful performance as real-life defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, who after graduating from Harvard travels to Alabama in hopes to help poor people who can’t afford legal representation. He then meets Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.

When They See Us (2019)

What it’s about: This four-part miniseries debuted on Netflix last year to critical acclaim. It explores the 1989 case in which five teenagers were falsely accused of assaulting a female jogger in Central Park and the impact it had on the families of the men who were accused.

The Green Book (2019)

What it’s about: A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.
