Yesterday SA was voted as a great booze-free adventure spot. Today, sommeliers are spotlighting the country as a wine region to watch. Conclusion? We’ve got the best of both worlds!

South Africa (05 January 2024) — After South Africa was named one of the must-visit destinations for booze-free adventures, a note of beautiful irony has been struck. According to Sommeliers (per Forbes) we are also a hotspot for wine adventures—competing with some of the top wineries in the world.

It’s no secret (to many of us locals, of course) that our country’s wine is top class. But for many wine snobs from different parts of the world who are used to older (and more expensive) winemaking regions, experiencing the wine magic of South Africa comes as a fabulous surprise.

In a piece centred around ‘unexpected wine regions’, Forbes noted that in 2024, less traditional regions are taking the spotlight according to sommeliers.

According to sommelier Bertil Jean-Chronberg:

“[People will] discover regions or states that have been subbed or forgotten.”

Putting South Africa on the list among Armenia, Greece, Lazio and Douro Valley, Sommelier Ray Shoals praised the country’s winemaking.

“I think there are some amazing producers from South Africa that can rival many [regions] for a fraction of the price!” Ray said.

“There’s so much activity in South Africa,” another praise-singing wine pro, Jim Clarke added, noting the chokehold white wine dominance in other parts of the world.

All in all, if you’re looking for a wine experience that’ll blow your fringe back, the expects have spoken and South Africa’s got to be on your bucket list.

Meanwhile for the zero-alcohol seeking travellers, there are a ton of booze free options on the cards in SA—from safaris to the surf and hikes.
