At 14:09 on the 13th of May 2024, South Africans will hold a moment of silence for the lives lost at the Victoria Road construction site in George.

George, South Africa (13 May 2024) – The community of George, alongside the support of South Africa, will be holding a moment of silence today, at 14:09, to honour the lives lost during the tragic construction site collapse that took place on the 6th of May 2024 at 14:09.

The past week has been filled with absolute heartache, moments of sheer joy when finding survivors, and endless hours of people pushing themselves to save as many lives as possible.

The aim now for the teams on the ground is to bring closure to the families that are still missing loved ones, through the use of South Africa’s dedicated pathology teams. Machines are still clearing the site and removing rubble, hoping to find the missing workers.

“In a somber reflection of the tragic events that unfolded one week ago today, we stand together in solemn remembrance of the lives lost in the Victoria Street building collapse, which occurred on 6 May at 14:09.

To the residents of George and all of South Africa, we humbly request your participation in observing a moment of silence today at precisely 14:09.

This act of solidarity is a poignant gesture to honor those who perished and to extend our heartfelt support to the families affected by this tragedy.” – George Municipality

Please set your alarm and together with friends, family, colleagues and maybe even strangers, take a moment today at 14:09 to honour the lives of the men and women who were lost in the accident.
