No more surprise loadshedding, as your calendars will automatically notify you when your power is off!
Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2022) – With just one click, you can now add the Loadshedding schedule directly into your digital calendars thanks to this open-source link created by a South African student!
No one likes loadshedding, and as much as we wish we didn’t need tools like these, South Africans are an incredible group of people who come up with solutions (when others seem unable to).
Boyd Kane, a CS Honours student at Stellenbosch University, interested in data science and probability theory, created an open source link that puts the loadshedding schedule directly into your calendars.
Kane says he created the open-source resource so South Africa will “never be left in the dark again”.
“I was frustrated with how EskomSePush didn’t really show me details about future load shedding, so I decided to solve the problem myself. It’s open source, so developers can use the information free of charge forever. So now anyone can see loadshedding details in their calendar, get notifications whenever they want them and plan their schedules properly.” Kane explained to Good Things Guy.
It’s super simple… you just need to click the link to get your loadshedding schedule and follow these steps:
- Scroll down to the blue links under Assets.
- Find the ICS calendar file corresponding to your area.
- Right-click on the file and copy the link.
- Open your calendar app (Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, etc.).
- Paste the calendar link in your App’s subscribe to calendar option.
- If you use Google Calendar, just click here and paste the link.
And there you have it! No more surprise loadshedding ever again!
