The volunteers that run the Sandton SPCA Book Nook have raised R500,000 for the charity through the sale of second-hand books.
South Africa (14 April 2024) — Opened in August 2022 at the Morning Glen Mall in Gallo Manor, the Sandton SPCA (SSPCA) Book Nook sells second-hand books and has raised R500,000 for the animal charity. Run by volunteers, the public has gone to great lengths to support the initiative.
The books sold at the shop are between 50 – 90% less than the retail value, making them a bargain find, but that means the volunteers who sell them sell a lot of them!
“We are heavily reliant on the public for good quality donations and of course, for buying their books at our book shops,” SSPCA GM Stephen Mailia said.
“This gross amount– before rent and utilities – raised by the Book Nook, is much needed. You can imagine how hard the volunteers must work to sell so many books, as some are only R10, to reach this amount.”
The Book Nook, the SSPCA’s on-site charity, and bookshops all contribute a significant amount to the monthly income needed to keep the doors open. The Book Nook is extremely popular with the community and has a solid base of regular customers.
“It costs us about R800,000 each month to run the SPCA. With more funding or income, we would be able to do more sterilization drives, outreach and education programmes or have more inspectors and vehicles operational in the communities we serve,” said GM Stephen Maila.
“The income generated by our three shops cannot be underestimated. Please support us buying, donating or volunteering.”
The Book Nook is now open Tuesdays to Saturdays and the SSPCA onsite shops are open Mondays to Saturdays. You can follow the Book Nook here. If you are looking for a charity shop in your area, you can find out helpful list here.
