Tourism in South Africa is up by 3% according to StatsSA, which is excellent news but who exactly is travelling to our beloved country?
South Africa – It is no secret that South Africa is a world-famous tourist destination, so it has been fascinating to see who exactly loves our country as much as we do.
StatsSA revealed the top ten countries that visit South Africa. The top ten make up 75.5% of all tourists that visit South Africa throughout the year. Majority of tourists landed at O.R Tambo; Cape Town International came in second and third was King Shaka.
They are as follows:
- United States of America (USA): 35 699 (21.5%)
- United Kingdom (UK): 21 834 (13.1%)
- India: 13 238 (8.0%)
- Germany: 11 827 (7.1%)
- France: 11 142 (6.7%)
- Australia: 8 825 (5.3%)
- China: 7 259 (4.4%)
- The Netherlands: 5 782 (3.5%)
- Brazil: 5 149 (3.1%)
- Canada: 4 771 (2.9%)
StatsSA then went on to share all the tourists who visit from Africa.
- Zimbabwe: 168 046 (29.3%)
- Lesotho: 121 426 (21.2%)
- Mozambique: 106 341 (18.5%)
- Swaziland: 75 161 (13.1%)
- Botswana: 51 668 (9.0%)
- Namibia: 14 682 (2.6%)
- Malawi: 12 853 (2.2%)
- Zambia: 11 527 (2.0%)
- Angola: 5 090 (0.9%)
- Nigeria: 3 597 (0.7%)
They went even deeper to show the demographics of people who were visiting, saying that 56.2% of visitors were male and 43.8% were female. 29.4% were people aged 35 to 44 years old and 27.9% were aged 25 to 34 years old.
97% of visitors were in South Africa as tourists for holidays while 2.4% were here for business and 0.5% for studies.
