Through their heartfelt efforts, Boston Media House PR students united their campus community in a shared commitment to mental health awareness and support while further raising funds for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).
Sandton, South Africa (25 September 2024) – It is truly inspiring to see young people tackling mental health matters proactively and offering a beacon of hope for those going through trying times.
Spearheaded by passionate public relations students at Boston Media House, the “Your Mind Matters” campaign was more than just a school project. It helped raise over R4000 for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) and was a heartfelt tribute to mental health awareness in a world often shrouded by stigma.
Using media skills for mental health matters
Turning their passion into purpose, the ‘Your Mind Matters’ campaign gave students the perfect stage to showcase their media skills in a real-world setting.
This initiative went far beyond being just an academic task, as it brought students together to support the important work of SADAG, including the country’s only 24/7 suicide crisis helpline and other valuable mental health initiatives.
The campaign kicked off at the end of August with a vital Wellness Wednesday online workshop, led by a SADAG Senior Counsellor and attended by students from Sandton, Arcadia, and Durban campuses.
Through a series of events, including a wellness workshop and a feel-good campus experience, the students raised funds and created a safe space for their peers to connect, share their experiences, and learn about the importance of mental well-being.
Coming together for a cause that truly matters
The dynamic campaign culminated in an emotional moment of silence, where students honoured friends and family who had lost their battle with depression. The emotional tribute underscored the profound impact of mental health issues and the need for greater understanding and compassion.
The entire on-campus initiative, which also incorporated important messaging around International Suicide Awareness Day, would not have been possible without the generous support of many of the community.
By offering product hampers, free tickets, vouchers, and memorable learnership experiences, the third-year students learned firsthand the power of collaboration and the value of community.
Through managing diverse stakeholders, they forged meaningful relationships and experienced the generosity of those united in keeping mental health at the forefront. This experience showed them the critical role of teamwork and the impact of rallying support for a cause that truly matters.
The experience underscored the importance of educating others about mental well-being while highlighting the crucial resources that SADAG offers to those in need.
Participating in this initiative gave the students a renewed understanding of their role in fostering a more compassionate, informed, and supportive community.
