Matthew Rice and Matthias Roux have been dubbed the greatest guitar makers of the generation. Thanks to their formidable bond and a curious craft that musicians can’t get enough of, this local duo has made their mark on the musicians’ map:

Cape Town, South Africa (21 January 2024) — A South Africa duo, a curious craft and a love for making music (though not in the way you think). These are just some of the ingredients that have led Matthew Rice and Matthias Roux to their spot on the map and a reputation that dubs them as ‘two of the greatest guitar makers of their generation.’

Creating a mere six instruments a year, their disciplines of design, music and craftsmanship are highly sought after by collectors with recent award-winning British guitarist Michael Watts (who also happens to be one of the duo’s favourite musicians) securing his own custom guitar.

But, luthiers Matthew and Matthias have something else that’s made them a formidable team beyond exception talent. Their bond has surpassed the test of time, having endured all the way from early childhood. Together, they’ve worked on projects of all shapes and sizes since their first guitar build at 18.

“Realising that we had created something special and unique, Matthias and I decided we would have to open our own workshop in order to pursue the direction we felt called to go in,” Matthew shared of their journey’s humble beginnings at a acoustic guitar making workshop.

Soon, the Casimi workshop was born. Casimi, an Arabic astrological term, means heart of the sun.

Over a decade later, the workshop still stands proudly in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs and continues to attract global attention.

“I am thrilled to make music with a Casimi guitar—they create some of the most wonderful musical instruments I have ever heard, and I look forward to many years of recording and composing using this instrument.”—Michael Watts.
