New year, new vibes, and a fresh Friday Five to kick off 2025! From soul-stirring movies to hidden gems in Joburg and the tunes that will define your playlists, this week’s guide is all about celebrating the good things lighting up our lives. Let’s start this year on a high note!

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 January 2025) – Happy Friday, friends! The air is electric, the year is new, and the excitement is palpable because this is the first “Friday Five” of 2025.

Let’s make it unforgettable (the New Year, not the article)!

If you’re new here, welcome! The Friday Five is your go-to guide for the good things lighting up our lives right now – from movies to series, music, food, apps, and places you’ll want to bookmark immediately.

Let’s dive into what’s making this week worth celebrating.

🎬 Movies: Stories That Shift Perspectives

Origin. This movie. Wow. It’s not just a film; it’s a profound experience. I first wrote about it in July after seeing it, and honestly, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s a heavy watch, but it’s brilliant. The kind of movie that changes your perspective on why we think, say, and believe the things we do.

The story grips you from the start – the gunshot echoes like a call to wake up. There’s the boy by the pool, the books being burnt, and the haunting photo by the hanging tree. And Brett. Oh, Brett. The border. The scene in Harlem. The man in the pit latrine. The oil. The prayers. Good grief, the prayers. Leaves fall like whispers of autumn, and somehow, they carry the weight of centuries. Then there’s the undressing, the haircutting, the ships, the dehumanising, the cruelty, the pillars, the screams, the tears, and the ending… my word, the ending.

This might all sound like word salad now, but trust me: watch it. Then you’ll understand.

“Not one of us was around when this house was built. But here we are. The current occupants of a property with stress cracks built into the foundation and a roof that must be replaced. We are the heirs to whatever is right or wrong with it. We didn’t erect the uneven pillars, but they are ours to deal with now. The cracks won’t fix themselves. Any more deterioration is on our watch.”

This quote has become my everything. It reminds us that we need to be better than those who came before us.

Now streaming on Netflix.

Then we have Nightbitch. A quirky title, a fascinating premise, and Amy Adams giving it her all. Nightbitch is a film that dances between reality and the surreal as it explores the challenges and transformations of motherhood. The story follows a woman grappling with the loss of her former self as she becomes a full-time mother.

The twist? She believes she might be turning into a dog.

Amy Adams’ performance is a standout, as she captures the raw emotions, frustrations, and bizarre humour of the character. While the pacing feels uneven at times, the film’s ability to delve into identity and self-discovery is commendable. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a movie that makes you think (and maybe squirm a little), give it a go. Nightbitch left me with a newfound appreciation for the complexities of motherhood.

Now streaming on Disney Plus (in some regions) and will be available to rent on AppleTV, Prime Video and GoogleTV soon.

🍿 Series: A Double Dose of Anne Rice

I’m doubling up on Anne Rice adaptations this week. Confession time: when these series first launched, I couldn’t get into them. I barely made it through the second episode of either. But something drew me back and now I’m completely hooked.

The reason I am sharing these with you is because both have new seasons coming out this year, which gives you some time to catch up. The series are available on Showmax South Africa and are also available to rent (at a cost) on AppleTV, Prime Video and GoogleTV. Alternatively, if you are reading this from around the globe, then both series are available on AMC+, MGM+, and Netflix (in some regions).

Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire

This series takes Rice’s iconic tale and breathes new life into it. Forget the original film or even the book’s rigid adherence; this adaptation is its own masterpiece. Set against a backdrop of decadence and darkness, it explores themes of love, power, immortality, and regret.

The series introduces us to Louis de Pointe du Lac and his complex relationship with the charismatic vampire, Lestat. Their dynamic is electric, and the storytelling is layered with emotional depth. The visuals are stunning, the performances riveting, and the gothic atmosphere is nothing short of spellbinding. Whether you’re a fan of Rice’s work or a newcomer, this is one series you shouldn’t miss.

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches

This series shifts gears, diving into the world of witches, curses, and familial legacies. It follows Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who discovers she is the heiress to a family of powerful witches. The exploration of Rowan’s powers and the dark forces tied to her family’s history creates an intriguing, suspenseful narrative.

The series is lush and atmospheric, with a mix of horror and drama that keeps you hooked. The ensemble cast delivers stellar performances, and the plot twists will leave you reeling. If you’re a fan of supernatural tales with a touch of elegance, this is your next binge-worthy obsession.

🎶 Music: Tunes for the Soul

I have two recommendations for you this week. Both are very new and both absolutely lovely.

First up is Teddy Swims. If you haven’t discovered him yet, do yourself a favour and hit play. This guy’s voice is pure magic, and his ability to connect through lyrics is unmatched. His blend of soul, pop, and R&B creates a sound that feels both fresh and familiar. His new album drops on 24th January, and the first three singles are already on repeat in my playlists.

Check out Bad Dreams, a track that’s hauntingly beautiful and showcases his vocal prowess. It’s the kind of song that sticks with you long after it ends.

Next up is Ed Sheeran’s new “Tour Collection”. The incredible live versions of his hits are something else. This collection brings a raw, intimate feel to his music, making you feel like you’re right there in the crowd. From heartfelt ballads to upbeat anthems, every track is a reminder of why Sheeran remains one of the best in the game. Highly recommend this one for your weekend playlist.

🗿 Places to Visit: Joburg Gems

I know some of you are still in Dezemba vibes and you may have some family or friends in Jozi, so I thought I would give a few recommendations for things to do while in the city.

Alto234 Bar

If you’re in the mood for a drink with a view, Alto234 is where you need to be. Perched atop The Leonardo, Africa’s tallest building, this rooftop bar offers breathtaking panoramic views of Johannesburg. It’s a feast for the eyes and the soul, especially at sunset when the city skyline is bathed in hues of orange and gold. Sip on a signature cocktail, sample the curated tapas menu, and revel in the luxury of being on top of the world. Whether you’re impressing a date or just treating yourself with some family and friends, Alto234 is an unforgettable experience.

Nirox Sculpture Park

Nestled in the Cradle of Humankind, Nirox Sculpture Park is an absolute gem for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is a harmonious blend of art and nature, featuring sprawling lawns dotted with incredible sculptures that seem to come alive in their serene surroundings. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just in need of a peaceful day out, Nirox offers something magical. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a leisurely lunch at the on-site restaurant, where farm-to-table dishes are crafted to perfection. My tip? Take a good book, a picnic blanket, and lose yourself in this oasis of creativity and calm.

Vilakazi Street

A trip to Joburg isn’t complete without a visit to Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world that has housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It’s a vibrant blend of history, culture, and community. Walk down this famous street and immerse yourself in its rich heritage. Visit Mandela House, where Nelson Mandela once lived, or enjoy the bustling atmosphere with street performers and local vendors offering authentic South African cuisine. Vilakazi Street is more than a destination; it’s an experience that connects you to the heartbeat of Soweto and the nation’s history.

The Westcliff (Four Seasons)

There’s brunch, and then there’s brunch at The Westcliff. This iconic venue offers a dining experience like no other, blending gourmet cuisine with stunning views of Johannesburg’s lush treetops. Add in mimosas and delectable dishes, and it’s the perfect day out! The Westcliff is awesome for a special occasion or simply indulging in the finer things in life. Pro tip: make a reservation early because this spot is always in high demand, especially during Dezemba vibes (which we know can last until February).

📱 Apps: Fun Meets Functionality

I found Locket this week and I am in LOVE! This photo widget app is all about sharing real-time snaps with friends. It’s fun, interactive, and super creative. The downside? You need to add friends to use it, and while it’s trending globally, not many South Africans are on it yet. Fingers crossed, it catches on locally soon (ahem, that’s your cue).

So as we step into 2025, let’s carry the good vibes forward. Whether you’re watching something that stirs your soul, listening to music that moves you, or exploring places that bring joy, make it a year of intentional living. The Friday Five is here to remind you that there are always good things to celebrate.

Happy twenty-twenty-high-five friends (I think thrive is already being used too much). I hope you have the best bladdy year.
