What do you get when you mix Bilal Göregen, The Kiffness and a dancing cat? This flipping awesome viral catchy dance track!

Western Cape, South Africa (25 December 2020) – David Scott from the Kiffness (who may have started losing his mind during lockdown?), has been no stranger to the hot and cold love of South African social media lately. While the artist has been a light for many during the lockdown, he has also faced his fair share of push back in recent weeks… luckily he has never waivered on creating awesome tracks, and Scott is being recognised globally for his latest collab.

On Friday the 18th of December, Scott released a remix of Bilal Göregen’s rendition of a Finnish folk song called Ievan Polkka which is seeing the South African get global recognition on many mainstream media sites around the world!

Bilal’s performance of Ievan Polkka first appeared on the internet in 2018 but first went viral when someone added “vibe cat” to the video, which is what caught Scott’s attention.

“When I first saw the video, I thought it was incredibly catchy & I thought it would be a fun song to remix. So I did a short, live looping remix & put it up on the internet. The response was great & many people seemed to want an official release, so DM’d my remix to Bilal on Instagram & asked him if he’d be keen to collab. To my surprise, he got back to me, saying that he liked my rendition & that I should do a full edit. We agreed to a 50 / 50 split on any revenue the remix would make.”

So Scott got to work. He was in Joburg at the time, so he got his bandmate Raiven to record some sax and send it to him from Cape Town. Jane from Veranda Panda also recorded some violin and sent it to him from Durban.

“I had planned an interview with Peach van Pletzen during my time in Jo’burg for his upcoming talk show, so we killed two birds with one stone & went to his studio after the interview to record my vocals & trumpet. Peach is also an excellent sound engineer, so I roped him into mixing & mastering the song. He nailed it!”

With the song done, Scott needed a music video and greenscreen seemed to be the best way forward, considering there was space on the bench next to Bilal.

“I don’t have a green screen so I reached out to some friends who could maybe help. During lockdown, I made contact with Dan Mace, and so I reached out to him. Unfortunately, he was away but Dan’s producer Jess Raine got back to me and was the most legendary person to work with. She managed to convince surf videographer Paul Daniel to be our DOP, and gaffer Tobie Smuts’ to help us with the greenscreen & lights. I roped my wife into being the backup dancer, and I’m so glad she did because it’s the magic sauce that ties the whole video together.”

With great footage, the only thing left to do was the edit, but with very limited greenscreen knowledge, Scott was a bit stuck. Luckily there were some “Kiff” film students around, William Annesley & Ethan Lundy, who were willing to help out.

“They helped key out the green, did a grade and made the footage look lekka. With a bit of tweaking and editing the video was ready. The response has been nothing short of amazing, and I’m just blown away by the love we’re receiving from the people of Turkey. I’ve always wanted to visit Turkey, but this whole experience has just made me want to visit even more because I really want to meet Bilal.”

“Without Jess or Dan Mace, the video wouldn’t have been possible, so I’m really just so thankful. A big thank you to all involved. This video has shown me once again that the internet can be a wonderful place.”
