‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, James Cameron’s first follow-up to the highest-grossing film of all time, will open in theatres on the 16th of December 2022.
Johannesburg, South Africa (09 May 2022) – The teaser trailer for 20th Century Studios’ ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, has just been released and we are excited!
James Cameron’s first follow-up to his ‘Avatar’, the highest-grossing film of all time, will open in theatres on the 16th of December 2022.
Cameron had stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the widespread success of the first film, with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release. However, the addition of three more sequels (to the first one), and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects.
The new film’s theatrical release has been subject to eight delays due to many different reasons, but it is currently planned for a release on the 16th of December 2022, with the following three sequels to be released, respectively, on the 20th of December 2024, 18th of December 2026 and 22nd of December 2028.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
“Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.”
Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.
To whet audiences’ appetites, the studio will re-release “Avatar” in theatres on the 23rd of September.
