South Africa (04 October 2022) – It is already getting really hot, and summer isn’t even here yet. This means more and more people are heading to the beaches, rivers and dams in their areas. The past week saw a tragic seven water-related fatalities in South Africa. The NSRI is hoping to remind people about general water safety, in the hopes of keeping the public safe.
These tips really do make a difference so even if you are not living near the ocean, be sure to share them. It could save a life!
“We are also using this opportunity to appeal to the public to have a safety-conscious mindset in and around coastal and inland waterways.
Boaters, paddlers and sailors should always use the free NSRI RSA Safetrx smartphone app and carry and know how to use your safety equipment. Be prepared for an emergency at all times.
Anglers fishing from the shoreline should be aware of the daily 2 high and 2 low tides and be aware of higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides during the full moon and new moon Spring tides.
Bathers always be aware of rip currents, don’t venture too deep into the water and preferably only swim at beaches protected by lifeguards.
Don’t cross through swollen rivers or drive across bridges that are underwater during flood conditions.
Your swimming pool at home should have a cloak of safety measures.
We are appealing to parents to ensure that children are watched over by a responsible adult while they are swimming.”
