Two SA Chefs iced and diced their way to the top of the food chain at the World Food Competition recently!
Kolkata, India (20 March 2024) — Two South African chefs and students are cooking with pride after they blew the competition out of the (perfectly heated and measured) water at the World Food Competition 2024 in Kolkata, India.
Held by Kolkata’s top hotel management college, Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management, culinary competitors from around the world readied their recipes and artistic fire to compete for the crown prizes.
South Africa welcomed a trio of trophies thanks to two SA chefs, Chef Palesa Pejane and Chef Michelle Jansen.
Chef Palesa’s talent in cake icing secured her a menu of compliments and also, the winning place in this artistic portion of the competition! In true local love, she dressed up a proudly South African cake, completed with colourful bead-inspired work.

But beyond her cake-finessing victory, Chef Palesa showcased other culinary art talents that wowed the World Food Competition so much so, she secured second place for the division overall.
Considering that there were 23 talented culinary artists vying for the chef’s podium, Chef Palesa’s silver came as a wonderful recognition of her craft.
But Chef Palesa was not alone at the winner’s table. Chef Michelle Jansen also scooped a second place for her magic touch in the mixology category thanks to her cocktails that captured the essence of Africa—something all South African cocktail lovers can happily cheers to.
All in all, the students from Bloemfontein made their trainer, Chef Michele Fourie and foodies in South Africa full with pride.
