This weekend, Uber is committing to feed one person for a week for every ride taken through the app on Saturday 25th July to Sunday 26th July 2020.

South Africa (24 July 2020) – Following the success of Uber’s partnership with Afrika Tikkun to provide food eCoupons to their driver and courier partners, Uber is now giving riders a chance to help those in need through their “You Ride, You Raise” campaign.

Through this initiative, Uber has committed to feeding one person for a week for every ride taken through the app on Saturday, 25 July to on Sunday, 26 July 2020. The selection of beneficiaries and distribution of food packages throughout this initiative will be led by Afrika Tikkun who remain steadfast in uplifting disadvantaged communities around South Africa.

How will this work?

  • Open your Uber app and add the promo UberTikkun
  • Take a trip between Saturday 25th July – Sunday 26th July 2020
  • For every trip taken, Uber will donate a meal to a person in need
  • The Uber app will be available at all times, however, riders who are travelling during curfew hours (21:00 PM to 04:00 AM) will be required to have a relevant permit in line with government regulations. Terms and conditions apply.

To date, through the food eCoupons, food relief has been provided to over 66 640 people across South Africa – drivers, couriers and their families.

“Over the past few months, we have worked tirelessly with leading NGOs to ensure we reach the most vulnerable members of society. We hope to increase these numbers with our latest initiative,” explains Frans Hiemstra, General Manager, Uber SA

“We realise a lot can still be done; however, we believe our efforts to make a difference in the lives of those most vulnerable, is a great start, and we will continue to give back to the communities who need it the most,” concludes Hiemstra.

Since the pandemic began, Uber has taken meaningful steps to help keep everyone on the Uber platform safe. This includes providing the latest public health information in our apps and all drivers and riders are required to wear a mask or face covering when taking a trip. As part of a new in-app safety checklist, before drivers can go online, they will be asked to take a selfie to verify they are wearing a mask or face covering. Riders are also required to take safety precautions like washing their hands before getting in the car, sitting in the backseat, and opening windows for ventilation.
