Jeppe Girls High School recently covered their school field in blankets that have been collected by 67 Blankets for Mandela Day’s “Local Blankets is Lekker” tour.

South Africa (09 June 2023) – After several years of hunkering down at home, the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day team set off on a national road trip to meet and greet every KnitWit that has contributed towards keeping South Africa warm. In the process, they have been collecting blankets for Mandela Day 2023 and the Jeppe Girls High School displayed some of the beautiful donations received from the Gauteng region.

The national road trip has been a smashing success. The latest leg of the journey has been an “at home” stop in Gauteng. They have made stops in places like White River, Mosselbaai, Daantjie and many more small towns that rarely get the spotlight. The Local Blankets is Lekker tour has taken the time to meet those people who always work behind the scenes of every big challenge.

On the 3rd of June 2023, the Jeppe Girls High School opened its fields to the 67 Blankets Team. Both have had a long-standing relationship, with the Jeppe girls often taking part in blanket challenges, world records and knitting/crocheting whenever needed. The young ladies at the school lend a helping hand whenever needed.

Seeing all the blankets come together is heartwarming, especially when you know that after the road trip and big shows, these blankets will go to old age homes and children’s homes. To disaster relief efforts and to charities in need. Every warm blanket you see here is one warm person this winter. We think that is extraordinary.

You can join the 67 Blankets cause and become a KnitWit via their Facebook group here. In the group, you will be able to connect with fellow KntWits in your area, collaborate on community-based projects, chat directly with the leaders of the organisation and stay up to date with exciting projects.

Take a look at some of the blankets below, Erwin Gonnermann took some incredible footage of the day. Keep an eye out because the next stop on this road trip is Durban, on the 10th of June 2023 – the goal is to collect 670 adult-sized blankets! Find out more here.
