His name is Mr Gene, and he has Dementia. Every single day something tells him to go sit outside and wait. And so his does. What happens next is beautiful.

Global (16 March 2022) – An old man with Dementia makes his way outside every single day at the same time, without actually understanding why.

His name is Mr Gene, and his memory resets every 15 minutes, but every single day something tells him to go sit outside and wait. And so his does.

The TikTok video, which has garnered over a million views, shows how after a couple of minutes, kids jump off a school bus to greet Mr Gene. The text in the video calls the kids ‘his biggest fans’… and even though – to him – it feels like the first time meeting them, these kids have been doing this for two years. Spending time with the neighbourhood hero.

And the comments on social media are a testament to the power of the video.

“I think even if his brain resets, his heart doesn’t. His heart tells him he needs to be there to see those kids every day. Compassion is amazing here” – 3633creativedesigns

“Yes I’m a grown man. Yes I needed tissues. No I’m not done crying.” – tac__daddy

“I love how understanding the kids are as well. shows that hate is taught and love is natural.” – candicehenderson10
