It’s time we start to shout, no more backing down! It may come as a shock, but when you strike a woman, you strike the rock!

Western Cape, South Africa (21 September 2020) – Lauren Heiberg – a Grade 12 student at Rustenburg Girls’ High School – has written and performed a powerful song for women, which is going viral.

The song was originally performed at the school’s online Women’s Day Assembly in August, but it seems that the Donovan Tooth ordeal, which came to the furore over the weekend, has brought many powerful posts in honour of women and against gender-based violence to the forefront.

Tooth has become a household name in South Africa after his Instastory body-shaming women went viral.

Tooth put out the Instastory on Thursday the 17th of September where he spent almost 4 minutes lambasting women and their weight. The post was then shared to Twitter and Facebook where it went viral. 24 hours later and Tooth put out a public apology “from the bottom of his heart”.

But the damage was already done, and women and men across the globe have used their social media platforms to stand up against the bullying and abuse that was shown in Tooth’s actions.

Heiberg’s song is a powerful ballad that is also a strong statement against gender-based violence!

Watch her performance here:

For years we stood no ground
We took the back seat
Smiled when we were told
Surrounded by defeat

Men couldn’t see our strength
We faced an enemy
Wanted equality
But now we’ll make you see

We are women
We stand as one
Take our hands
Hear our song

We’ll fight for freedom
For our lives
We are here
We will rise
We will rise

And now today we face
A wrath with no embrace
But I know we’ll make it through
Because of me and you

We are women
We stand as one
Take our hands
Hear our song

We’ll fight for freedom
For our lives
We are here
We will rise
We will rise

It’s time we start to shout
No more backing down
It may come as a shock
When you strike a woman, you strike the rock

We are women
We stand as one
Take our hands
Hear our song

We’ll fight for freedom
For our lives
We are here
We will rise
We will rise
