By teaching the girls how to change a tyre and handle other basic maintenance tasks, The Wykeham Collegiate equipped Grade 12 girls with the confidence and independence to take charge of their own safety and well-being.
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (30 September 2024) – Cars, as great as they are, have a way of catching you off guard with their many mechanical demands that can leave you in a panic.
There is no feeling of stress and defeat that quite compares to being stranded at the side of the road due to a car breakdown or flat tyre, especially as a young woman.
Giving many young girls the power to avoid such stressful situations, was The Wykeham Collegiate which recently hosted a Car Maintenance and Safety lesson.
Playing his part to prepare the school’s Grade 12 learners for life beyond high school was Mr Willows as part of a Life Orientation class.
Among other car safety checks, one of the key lessons was to teach the girls how to change a tyre using the necessary tools, using the school’s bus.
The initiative proved a fun and insightful learning experience that will equip the girls with the skills, resourcefulness and independence to take charge of future motor inconveniences.
“As many are learning to drive, it’s essential to equip them with practical skills like handling breakdowns or changing a puncture when help isn’t immediately available.
“Empowering our girls with real-world knowledge is just one of the ways we’re preparing them for the road ahead—both on and off the road,” the school shared.
