A new petition calling for Zuma to resign has already collected over 30 000 signatures in less than 24 hours proving that South Africans are ready to rise… together!
South Africa (01 April 2017) – The Petition calling for Zuma’s resignation started on what is being called “Black Friday” after the president of South Africa fired the Finance Minister and shuffled the entire cabinet.
But the hope of the people standing together is what might make the difference.
Brent Lindeque originally created the petition to try make some sort of difference with a collective voice.
“Over 30 000 people have signed the #ZumaMustFall petition in less than a day… 30 000 people all speaking with one voice.”
“The Zuma presidency has been a blight on South Africa – only his removal from office can help repair the damage he has caused.”
“We need change.”
“This petition will showcase how many of us want change and given enough support, together we can create that change.”
“Sign it now and forward on to every South African who cares.”
Lindeque added that he understands that the Democratic Alliance (opposition party) have also created a petition in another “Vote of no confidence” but feels like something had to exist that was not aligned to a political party as people might not want to be aligned with the opposition.
“Some people may not want to sign something that is associated with a certain political party. It’s the reality of the people. The change.org petition that I started does not belong to a certain race or political party. It is for South Africans, by South Africans.”
And here’s why he believes digital petitions matter:
Beyond seeking change, petitions serve other important functions, such as mobilizing supporters and reinforcing views. Lawmakers on all levels pay attention to petitions because they demonstrate either existing organizational strength or the ABILITY to organize.
Those 30,000 people can all be mobilized to create action.
A petition allows the creator to have direct, simultaneous & live conversations to all the people who have signed it, and let those people who care about the same cause know about planned protests, rallies and even tax revolts if it comes to that as social media conversations are suggesting.
The people who took the action to join this collective conversation have also made the decision to become informed, to know what the next steps are, and ultimately become the change makers that South Africa desperately needs right now.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
