It has been 666 days since the 26th of March 2020.
Johannesburg, South Africa (21 January 2022) – Today is 666 days since the lockdown started in South Africa.
I know there was a discussion about when the state of disaster was spoken about, announced, implemented or whatever, BUT today, 666 days ago, we had to lock our doors and were not allowed to leave our home.
Do you remember how weird it was?
How outside became the enemy? Do you remember how quiet it was? How everything was closed? How we were sanitizing our groceries? How zoom became a norm? How we stood outside at night with pots and pans to celebrate our frontline workers? How we lost people we loved?
Do you remember?
I am watching Nat Geo’s “The First Wave” and David Attenborough’s “The Year Earth Changed” today.
Why?
Because we cannot forget. We mustn’t forget.
Yeah, 2022 will be the year we let the pandemic go. COVID will still be here, but we will live with it and move on. We have to.
We have to!!!!
But we cannot forget.
To all the frontline workers, I just want to thank you. Every single one of you. Thank you for saving us and for helping us get through this.
To all the lives that have been lost. We mourn you. And miss you. Good grief, I miss you.
And to those that have not been impacted by the last 666 days, count yourself so damn lucky.
What a weird, weird 666 days.
