An article stating that Betty White has ‘dyed’ is trending again… so one man has started a GoFundMe campaign to keep her safe from 2016.
‘Empire News’ web site published the punning article which recently started trending with a headline that read:
“Actress Betty White, 93, Dyes Peacefully In Her Los Angeles Home”
But the punning headline reference has nothing to do with dying… and everything to do with dyeing. Ummm… easy mistake to make.
Rumours have started spreading that Betty White has passed away as many social media users have been sharing the article as ‘breaking news’ without actually reading the article.
So here’s a little snippet from the original article.
“In a press release from her long-time manager Jeff Witjas, it has been confirmed today that actress Betty White, best known for her roles on TVs The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland, is not a natural blonde.”
“Betty is a solitary kind of person,” said Witjas. “She likes to relax in her home with her animals, and she rarely likes to discuss the fact, at least in public, that she is actually a brunette.”
“She has been dying her own hair in her home for decades. Betty has often told me she feels it is relaxing and soothing to dye her own hair, peacefully in her home, where she can laugh and enjoy time with her animals. She’s said on more than one occasion that as a blonde, she has had ‘more fun’ in her roles, and in life.”
However, as seen above, the article was just a spoof from Empire News, one of many fake news sites that publishes outrageous fictional stories with headlines that make you share and click their articles.
The site’s disclaimer page notes that Empire News “is a satirical and entertainment website.”
However in real news… someone has really started a GoFundMe campaign to ‘Protect’ Betty White from 2016… we’re not even joking.
As the past week brought news of deaths of George Michael and Carrie Fisher, people are fearing that 2016 might take the life of another beloved celebrity: Betty White.
A user named Demetrios Hrysikos from South Carolina created a GoFundMe page to “protect” the Golden Girls actress from 2016.
“Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White,” Hrysikos wrote. “If she’s okay with it, I will fly to wherever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan. 1, 2017.”
The campaign has already raised almost $6000 as of Thursday morning… thats almost R100 000!
