5 things you need to know about South Africa today:

No ruling from Tim Noakes hearing, matter adjourned until April 2017

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) incorrectly announced on Friday that Professor Tim Noakes had been found guilty of unprofessional conduct.

The HPCSA sent out its initial press release that caused mass confusion just before 1pm and only retracted it at 4.20pm.

“We apologise for incorrectly stating that Professor Tim Noakes was found guilty by the Professional Conduct Committee,” the second press release said.

Van Rooyen visited Guptas 7 days in a row prior to appointment as finance minister

Des van Rooyen visited the Gupta family compound not just once, but seven times, in the days before his appointment as finance minister by President Jacob Zuma in December last year.

The visits, on consecutive days between December 2 and 8, have been revealed by a team of public protector investigators tasked with probing alleged state capture by the family.

SA urged to reconsider ICC decision

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged South African President Jacob Zuma on Sunday to reconsider a plan to withdraw from the International Criminal Court in October next year.

The International Criminal Court, which opened in July 2002 and has 124 member states, is the first legal body with permanent international jurisdiction to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Gauteng residents urged to use water sparingly as shortages bite

The City of Johannesburg is urging residents to use water sparingly amid the heat wave.

“The City of Johannesburg is still under level 2 water restrictions and receiving 15% less water from Rand Water,” it said in a statement on Sunday.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the only solution to the current water shortage was for those who still had water to significantly reduce their consumption immediately.

It’s reported there are informal discussions to have charges against Gordhan, Pillay and Magashula dropped.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says there is no truth to reports that it’s head, Shaun Abrahams, is considering dropping the charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The City Press is reporting that informal discussions are underway between Abrahams, Gordhan’s lawyers and those of former South African Revenue Service (Sars) officials Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula to have the fraud charges against the three men dropped.

They are expected to appear in court on Wednesday for their handling of an early retirement payout for Pillay, who was then reinstated as a contractor.
