A young truck driver from Touws River has pleaded with protesting students to stop their “kak” and behave in a more civilized manner.
“Kry net rigting in julle lewe asseblief en wees bietjie civilised, want julle is uit orde uit vir studente wat leer vir iets. (Get direction in your lives and be a little more civilised, because you are out of order for students who are studying to achieve something),” Josh Bergh said in a video he recently posted on Facebook.
In a comical three-minute video, the honest 27-year-old gives his view on the current student protests in his colourful Afrikaans. He describes himself as a Touws River “plaaskind” and says he is proud of it.
By Wednesday evening, it had gone viral. Shared more than 20 000 times and viewed more than 200 000 times.
Former University of the Free State vice-chancellor Jonathan Jansen was one of those who shared it.
“I rest my case. You sir, are educated. Often wisdom comes from the most (extra) ordinary citizens. Listen to this young man,” Jansen commented.
Bergh questions how students could demand that “fees must fall”, when government had to spend money replacing what they destroyed during their protests.
“Hoe die donner kan ons fees laat fall as jy vandalise alles wat moet gebruik word?”
Students have been protesting on campuses nationwide following Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande’s announcement on Monday that universities could determine their own fee increments for 2017, as long as these were capped at 8%.
