We’re all about the good things but being in the know gets you half way here. Thats why every morning we’ll be bringing you the top things you need to know!
Having access to current events and up-to-date information has value in the modern world because of the constantly changing nature of the world.
Without regular access to news, most people would be unaware of the various events taking place, both locally and around the world, that have an impact on their lives.
News is more than just facts and information; it is information that affects us.
News affects how we live our lives, how we perform our jobs, how we function, and how we make decisions. We decide whether or not to carry an umbrella or cancel a picnic based on weather reports.
So everyday we will be bringing you a “News Digest” to wake up too. Here’s everything you need to kick off your morning.
5 things you need to know about South Africa today:
No, really. This time it’s happening. The report by former public protector Thuli Madonsela into the alleged “capture” of the state by the Gupta family was finally released on Wednesday; it did not contain good news for President Jacob Zuma.
The public protector asked Zuma to appoint a commission of inquiry within 30 days to investigate the extent of state capture more fully. The commission’s head will be selected by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
EFF rebels leave Juju for new party
Disgruntled EFF members in KwaZulu-Natal have dumped Julius Malema and his troops to form their own splinter party, calling it the Effective Economic Emancipation.
The new party has opened branches in Gauteng. It will be launched this month.
DA in talks over motion of no confidence in Zuma
The DA is in talks with MPs as it tries to call another for another motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, the opposition party said on Sunday.
While party leader Mmusi Maimane would not say who they were talking to, he said discussions were ongoing.
Nuclear deals could be ‘captured’
Environmentalists have warned that proposed nuclear building programmes could be “captured” if Eskom continues to be the procurement agency for the project, which is expected to cost more than R1-trillion.
Environmental action group Greenpeace said former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on state capture released last week confirmed that vested interests and corruption in the energy sector were central to the energy choices made in South Africa.
Sexwale, Pahad drink from Gupta watering hole too
Whoever said “When days are dark, friends are few” clearly did not have to contend with the nature of friendship given by former cabinet ministers Essop Pahad and Tokyo Sexwale, among others.
At a time when, as Sexwale says, “Gupta-linked” is a swearword, the two confess their buddy-buddy relationship with members of the influential family, especially Ajay Gupta.
