What if your heart isn’t just a pump keeping you alive but a keeper of your most sacred moments—a living diary of love, loss, and joy, quietly shaping the story of your life? A diary of Heart Memories.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 November 2024) – I came across a TikTok the other day that stopped me in my tracks. It spoke about the idea that our hearts might actually hold memories. Not just metaphorically but in a very real, science-backed way.

The thought has stayed with me ever since—because, let’s face it, it’s kind of magical.

Being the curious sort, I dug a little deeper (thank you, internet). While the web can validate even the wildest ideas, there’s something undeniably beautiful about this notion. And it turns out, there’s some science to it.

Apparently, the heart isn’t just a pump working to keep us alive—it’s so much more. It’s like its own vibe, a whole personality. Science (according to the internet, at least) backs up what we’ve probably felt intuitively for centuries: the heart has its own “little brain,” complete with neurons that can remember, process information and even influence how we experience the world.

Even more fascinating, the heart apparently generates a magnetic field that’s significantly stronger than the brain’s, connecting us emotionally to others and tuning us into our feelings. It also releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps with bonding and even shapes how we think. The heart really might hold onto the things the mind can’t—or won’t. It’s like a living, emotional diary, keeping some of our most sacred moments safe.

So when our heart races at the thought of someone or something, or when grief has us clutching our chest, or when a warm glow spreads through us in a moment of joy – it could be your heart remembering. Remembering the love, the loss, the laughter, and the moments that shaped us.

Maybe our hearts are more than just organs; maybe they’re curators of our lives, holding onto the moments that matter most.

Think about it: the memories that take our breath away, whether from joy or heartbreak, don’t just fade. They linger. They are always there. They become a part of who we are, shaping how we see the world and connect with others. Our hearts remind us to feel deeply, to remember and to cherish those experiences.

I am calling these our “heart memories”.

And we need to treat them like treasures.

We need to let them guide us, teach us, and remind us to live with intention. Every beat of our heart is a chance to create a new moment worth holding onto.

So friends, spend more time with the people who fill your life with meaning. Laugh until it hurts. Cry when you need to – it’s part of being human. Take risks, embrace tenderness and dive into moments of joy, no matter how small. These are the memories that truly make your heart come alive.

Make more heart memories.
