Messages of thanks to the Joburg Water repair team have started flooding social media after the recent water outage.

On Monday this week‚ a burst pipeline buried 35 metres under an unstable landfill in Linbro Park near Alexandra caused a water outage that lasted 3 days for most of the metro’s north. Reservoirs as far away as Bryanston and Fourways ran dry.

This was the largest repair job ever done by Joburg Water on a main line and the water outage left over 34 neighbourhoods dry for over 3 days while the repair team worked tirelessly to restore all the affected areas.

On Friday morning Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba stated that he had been informed that reservoirs were almost filled back up to full capacity and that most areas in Sandton and surrounds had their water supply back.

South African social media had been buzzing in conversation about the water outage for most of the week with many angry residents complaining about the infrastructure and lengthy repair time.

But once the water started running again and Joburger’s could reassess their situation, many took to social media to express their thanks to the the team who had repaired the pipe.

Travis Kruger posted that he was feeling blessed and lucky as most of the less fortunate live without water everyday:

“Our experience of the Wateroutage in Fourways has been quite humbling. From making trips to and from the complex pool with buckets for the toilets, to bringing 25l drums of water from work. Today I bathed with less then 1l of water from the basin.”

“This is how many South Africans have to live each day and it’s not easy. Many of us take how privileged we are for granted. Seeing how the rich just moan and complain about our current situation is disgusting. Jhb water had to make the biggest repair job in their history and it’s only taken 2.5 days (I hope) and I think that’s flipping awesome!”

“Take a moment today to think about those less fortunate and appreciate just how lucky we are.”

Steph-Jane Acar reflected on how grateful she was and how grateful we should all be:

“Irrespective of the inconvenience that we all experienced. Somehow the City of Joburg Water and its workers deserve a “Huge Thank You” for this mammoth task they were faced with and the professional regular update that we’ve been receiving on the progress of work done !!!”

“Proud to be South African.”

“Everyone needs to stop bitching and complaining and look at the other side of the coin.”

“Be grateful for what you have. Majority of our population live without water everyday.”

“Be grateful you have running water and give the guys trying to fix this huge problem a chance to do to properly.”

“They could have just recharged the system without care and everything could have burst again leaving us without water for even longer.”

Chun Stucke spoke about the fact that we all need to be doing our bit to conserve water.

“I think these workers are amazing. They have worked in the hot, unrelenting sun unabatedly. Really makes me grateful to know that we still have people willing to get the job done, and do so despite setbacks and challenges.”

“It has also brought the reality of the necessity of water conservation and care home to me in a very real manner. I’ve been to CT several times recently and saw the impact there. We really need to all do our bit to conserve and preserve for the benefit of all. Don’t just let water run down road for days for example.”

“Thank you again to everyone who is working and helping through this time. Bless you.”

  1. This is great to read. We so often forget to say thank you to the service providers who have to go the extra mile to make our lives run smoothly and though I was not affected I was impressed with the updates and the speed with which the water was back on tap.
