drinking shots

South Africans have taken to social media to share what they are calling the most dangerous drinking game in the world. We’re calling it the drunkest drinking game in the world.

The game was originally created by Gareth Cliff in 2011, in an attempt to get his radio audience of politically disengaged young people, interested in the very boring State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Cliff shared an excerpt from his book Cliffhanger, where he explains the basics of the “State of the Nation Drinking Game”.

“Since many had no taste for the political, I thought I’d see if I could bring a whole new audience to the current Head of State’s remarks that start the parliamentary year.”

The game was an instant hit and was trending on Twitter, before ‘trending on Twitter’ became trendy.

In fact, President Zuma tipped his hat to Cliff and the rest of social media users at the very start of his speech (and for the first time in parliament) when he said that there were those who ‘are following on the Twitter’, laughed, pushed his glasses up and cleared his throat.

But in recent years SONA has become synonymous with violence and tension before the actual proceedings and as expected social media users have taken the initiative, to update the game to suit the current parliament situation.

With the new rules you probably won’t make it to the actual Presidential address at all (or you might but you’ll be so blind drunk by the time he takes the podium, that you won’t remember it).

Check out the new list of rules being shared below:

  • “Honorable Member” = 1x shot
  • “Point of Order” = 1 x shot
  • “Order” = 1x Shot
  • “Racist” = 1x Shot
  • “Sit down/Leave the chamber” = 1 shot
  • Every time a microphone gets muted = Down a drink
  • Every time a physical fight breaks out = Down a drink”

And thanks to YouTube, you won’t even have to wait for next year’s SONA to play!

Watch the 10 minute clip below but be warned, you may drink a bucket load (we counted 8 shots in the first 40 seconds).
