South Africans are standing up and together against a disgusting racist post made after the passing of one of our greatest heroes.
The real story here is not about the racist post, you’ve most probably seen it trending all over social media and out of respect for the Van Der Westhuizen and Vittone family, we do not want to re-share the picture further.
The story is about South Africans from all races, hailing from all over the country, standing together against blatant racism.
Riaan Lucas, a Capetonian living in Johannesburg posted a distasteful racist meme hours after Joost Van Der Westhuizen passed away. We’re guessing he had no idea that it would go further than his 300 friends.
But it did… hundreds and thousands of South Africans started commenting and engaging with the post to express their disgust. It even started trending internationally.
By the time Lucas eventually deleted his Facebook (or Facebook deleted it for him)… the post already had over a million comments.
“Riaan Lucas decided to remove his racist post and shut down his Facebook profile. Sorry but the internet never forgets. You not only celebrated the death of a South African icon hours after he died, but you also celebrated the death of someone because they are a specific race. It’s unacceptable and you should be taken to the Human Rights Commission.” – Renaldo Gouws, DA councillor
The community collectively shut down his Facebook and 2 of his friends (Denver Lopes and Ling Sheperd) who were all publicly expressing their joy for another “white man dying”.
The internet is a vast place where one can get lots of information about someone. The community quickly found the three Facebook users contact details, addresses and employers details which have all also been posted online.
Since then, all of their listed employers have also been contacted by phone, email and thousands of posts on the relevant company pages.
Afriform are apparently also taking this further with the Humans Right Commission while many users have already lodged complaints directly with them.
We are sure that this is not the last we will hear about this as other media agencies pick up on the story but what we do know is that South Africans are standing together against hatred and racism and that for us is the good news here.
If 2016 was all about exposing racism, then 2017 is where we collectively stand together against it.
Destroy riaan lucas and his stupid friends.
