South African students across the UK march in solidarity with #FeesMustFall

A group of South African students in the United Kingdom have been talking animatedly about the student protests back home. Today, they will march to the South African High Commission to demand that government prioritise the fees crisis in higher education.

Opposition parties win bid to intervene in state capture case

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that four opposition parties and Vytjie Mentor can intervene in President Jacob Zuma’s legal bid to interdict the release of the Public Protector’s state capture report.

The report, compiled by Advocate Thuli Madonsela, is believed to expose the nature of the relationships between the president’s friends, the Guptas, and himself, as well as several ministers.

Zuma rebuked, faces calls for change

The non-profit Nelson Mandela Foundation, whose board consists of 10 prominent South African academics, politicians and journalists, called on the African National Congress, the liberation movement once headed by Mandela and now led by Zuma, to change its leadership.

“We call on the governing party to take the steps necessary to ensure that the vehicle of state be protected and placed in safe and capable hands,” it said in a rare statement entitled: “Time to account for crippling the state”.

South African dams could take up to five years to recover from drought

South Africa’s dams could take up to five years to recover even if the country experiences normal rainfall following a severe drought, authorities said on Tuesday, increasing the prospects of water rationing.

Panayiotou trial continues in Port Elizabeth
