Joost van der Westhuizen

A fan has made the most beautiful tribute video in honour of Joost van der Westhuizen, a South African hero and legendary icon.

Johannesburg, South Africa – Joost van der Westhuizen, a South African legend on the rugby field and an inspirational hero to many around the world, passed away on the 6 February in Johannesburg. He was 45.

The former Springbok died at his home after losing his battle with motor neurone disease, six years after being diagnosed with the illness.

Keiran Duignan created the 4-minute short film titled ‘Number 9’ in honour of Joost van der Westhuizen. The clip features many of his memorable rugby moments and highlights the J9 Foundation for those that want to know more about MND.

“A short tribute film of one of the greatest Scrum-Halves ever to play Rugby Union. I made this film to try and help raise awareness to the destructive degenerative disease ALS-MND.”

  1. Beautiful tribute. Beautiful man. The courage he showed on the rugby field stood him in good stead for the battle he faced with his illness. MND robbed Joost of so much, but he left this life victorious and strong. RIP Joost.

  2. He was a true legend of the game. All South Africans should honor Joost by wearing any Bok jersey this Friday. Remembering a legend! J9
