Speeding kills

The Western Cape Government have released yet another shock tactic video to urge road users to stop speeding and follow the limits set by law.

One month ago we wrote a story about the Western Cape Government sharing a video of people around Cape Town being caught on camera having epic fail moments. The moments occurred while these everyday citizens where walking and looking down at their phones. That video ended in a shocking moment and had everyone thinking a little harder about their cellphone habits.

This time the Safely Home page has shared a new video for their #SpeedKillsFacts campaign and it is another shocker! The WC Government usually posts video’s that shock viewers and this one is no exception. It hits home hard.

“Travelling just 5kph over the speed limit gives you less time to react. And the knock-on effect can be devastating. It won’t kill you to slow down. #SpeedKillsFacts”

The terminology of speeding can sometimes be confusing so the WC Government has clarified it for everyone.

Speeding” is driving above the speed limit whilst “excessive speed” is driving way above the speed limit, and you can be arrested for it. This applies at 30 km/h or more in an urban area and 40 km/h or more outside an urban area or on a freeway. Under Sections 35 and 36 of the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996 your driver’s licence will be suspended if you are convicted of excessive speed.

Inappropriate speed” is driving too fast for the conditions; for example, driving at the speed limit in heavy rain.

They titled the video ‘The Knock On Effect’ because of everyone that is effected when someone is in an accident. Sometimes it isn’t only the people involved in the crash. This video makes your heart nearly stop, it does contain images of a graphic nature.

Be safe out there everyone, especially as the ‘Silly Season’ is just around the corner.
